 Welcome to The Wandering Sportsman.

Sporting travel through stories, films, and photography, capturing wild places, fly rods, bird dogs, big game, and the people who live for the journey
This is a home for sporting travel told through stories, films, and photography. shaped by rivers, bird coverts, open country, and wild places. Created by outdoor storyteller and photographer Ray Miller, it’s built on real time afield: early mornings, long days, missed chances, and the quiet rewards that come only through experience.

At the heart of the site is a sporting journal rooted in tradition, curiosity, and respect for the land, offering honest reflections and lessons drawn from time outdoors. Alongside the journal are films, photography, and a carefully limited number of personally hosted hunting, fishing, and photography adventures, each led with care, intention, and attention to detail.

If you value meaningful journeys, earned experience, and time well spent outdoors, you’re in the right place.

“Because the journey is the story.”

“A Fox in the Last Light”

One from the archives, captured long before the rush of deadlines and distant miles. A red fox slips quietly through the edge of the woods, bathed in that soft, golden light that only seems to exist in memory. Moments like this remind me that the wild doesn’t need to announce itself… it simply appears, if you’re willing to slow down and notice.

  The Calypso Knife

Built for the demands of the water and the wild, the Calypso is a true saltwater companion, designed to perform where others fail.

Patagonia Trophy Trout Adventure: Sea-Run Browns & Monster Rainbows

There are trout trips…

And then there are journeys that stay with you.

In 2027, I’ll be returning to Argentina to host one of the most complete trout adventures I’ve ever put together,
Swinging flies for sea-run brown trout on the Río Gallegos…

Then stepping into another world, chasing giant rainbow trout on Jurassic Lake.

Two fisheries. Two completely different experiences. One unforgettable journey.

Small group. Prime dates. Incredible water.

If this has ever been on your list… now’s the time.

Spring’s Awakening: Hendricksons & Gobblers on the Upper Delaware

Picture

There is a moment each year, somewhere between the last frost and the first true warmth, when everything begins again.

You feel it before you see it.

The air softens. The river breathes differently. The woods begin to whisper.

And then, almost overnight, spring arrives.

For those of us who live for time afield, it brings two of the most anticipated events of the year, the first great Hendrickson hatch on the Upper Delaware, and the thunderous awakening of turkey season.

Two different pursuits. One shared heartbeat.
